New York Maybe?

August 30, 2012

This post is going to be a series of things. And I will explain as I go. Let's just say it has something to do with NEW YORK FASHION WEEK.

I recently found out that I am invited to a wedding for a co-worker of mine. I haven't been to a wedding in so long! I'm super excited to go. Even though it is a long time from now, I have already begun to search for dresses. I've been annoying my co-worker with details about the wedding so I can plan my outfit. Overly excited? Yeah, a little bit but a wedding is a good excuse to dress up :) Plus, there will be music, food, entertainment and lots of celebrating!

From what I have found out, it is going to be a wedding and reception by the beach. So with that, I can assume a daytime event, leading into night. I want something not dark (I always think dark dresses look fancy at night) and something long, because with being by the beach, the weather is unpredictable. So this is what I put together! A long maxi cut-out dress from Gap. I love this dress! It's a silk material with a leaf/line design. This dress has a lot of material so has a lot of movement and fluidity, great for windy places like by the beach where the dress can catch some breeze and just flow.

Other things I like about this dress are the back and front cut-outs! Super simple, yet add great detail to the dress. The length was just right on me, which I have a hard time finding since I'm not really tall. If you go back to my old post here, you know that I really like back cut-outs. The back only has a small cut-out, not showing too much back. Keeping it cute and a little more formal. The front has a big scoop cut and that's great for pairing the dress with a big or colored necklace.

Steven Madden wedges, Forever 21 earrings, necklace and bracelet

My accessories reflect my dress. I styled it with silver leaf earrings and cuff bracelet from Forever 21. I wanted to add a little bit of color so I went with this ombre mint necklace. It is a very mute color so it didn't overdue the dress. For shoes, I went with nude wedges. They are easy to walk in and help the dress not drag on the ground.

My favorite thing about this dress though is that Halle Barry owns the same one! She certain rocks it differently than I do but I love how celebrities today are wearing non-high end designer clothes! It just shows A-listers are casual, normal people too.

Lets go into FASHION WEEK

For those who are unclear of New York Fashion Week, it's a series of events, particularly fashion shows and debuts, held in New york where designers present their upcoming Spring/Summer collections for the next year and in this case, 2013. It gives everyone a sneak peak of what to look for in the upcoming season. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is great for looking up who will be there and what time.

Why would New York Fashion Week be an amazing experience for me to be a part of? I think goals are important. When you set goals, you have something to strive for. I feel that goals create motivation and drive. It pushes you to work hard to accomplish that goal. I've been to many Fashion Night Outs in different cities. But that is just one night. While in New York, it's an entire week. It has been one of my goals for a long time now to attend Fashion Week in NY. I didn't know how I was going to do it but I knew, one day it would happen. But who would have thought, this amazing internship would give me a chance to do so! When I set goals, I don't set them for me to fail. I have the motivation, mindset and ability to perform whatever task I need to. Whether it is helping a model with a quick change or just standing with an iPad in hand on every social media site updating, I can be there to do that.

NY is the fashion mecca where people from around the world get together to share their designs, ideas and creativity. It has always been a dream destination of mine. Some dream about Spain, Hawaii, Europe or the Caribbean while I imagine what it would be like to shop in SoHo, sip coffee in the Upper East Side, take pictures in Central Park and browse through 5th Ave. Life of a fashion student, right? Having never been there, I would love for the first time to be because of Fashion Week. I've seen Los Angeles, I've seen San Francisco. Some say those cities don't even compare to New York. I think this is because of the wide-spread of the fashion industry in the Big Apple. Vera Wang, Zac Posen, Donna Karan- all fashion designers based in New York. What an amazing feeling it would be to be in the same city as them and maybe even the same room!

Someone well known to New York? MICHAEL KORS. His Pre-Spring Summer Ready-to-Wear line is just so true to himself, as I believe every designer should be (picture above). He stays true to what his label is about. His classic ready-to-wear collections are made to cater to a variety of women. He mostly works within the same palette and uses minimal print. He produces merchandise where customers can tell it is a Michael Kors item without having a logo in your face. He is a truly talented designer who has set a name for himself. I appreciate fine talent when I see it which is why I praise Michael so much. It's amazing to see these designers constantly stay creative, original and true. To be able to share just even a few days with or around people like that would be an honor.

Fashion Week isn't something that is just thrown together in a week. It starts again from the moment the last show ends. Designers are back at it; trend forecasting, sketching and developing. It's like Fashion Week is their motivation to keep working and if I were to be apart of that, I KNOW this will not only be a fun time, but more importantly, a learning and motivating experience. Even if I'm going to be working, I will still give it 100%. Fashion never sleeps and I may not either but I'm ready for the challenge. I would love to share that week with people who have the same interest and are there for the same reason as me, for the love of fashion.

I love what I do and I love the career path I have chosen. Right now, I want to be a visual merchandiser or stylist. Being able to see what that is all like first hand would be so inspirational. The fashion industry is tough but to get the chance to go to Fashion Week in New York would show me a taste of it's like. It would show me hard work pays off. It would show me fashion is more than just putting on clothes. It would show me that this, this is all worth it.

I've worked very hard to get to where I am and appreciate even having the possibility to attend this event.

Lyrics: I threw my bag on the floor. Oh my gosh it's Michael Kors. I looked at him as it fell. Now he's looking my way. I'd trade my post for a trip. Pennies and dimes for a tip. I was hoping for this. So please send it my way. Your vote is helpful. New York sounds delightful. I'd be oh so grateful. When are we leaving baby? Hey I just met you. And this is crazy. But I love New York. So send me maybe. And this is why. You should choose me. But here's my blog post
